This month, I would like to touch on a rather bizarre part of the Thai prison system. It is a question that we get asked all the time by visitors and people who write. Are there’Ladyboys’ in where you are?
There is a small percentage of Thai people (men in particular) are asexual and in jail it is even more obvious. There are men in here who are not considered to be men, they are women. Everybody has heard the stories of becoming someone’s Bitch whilst in prison; these guys do it for money. They are a commodity that is openly traded. For a small fee it is possible to sleep with one of these disgraceful abominations. To own one as a ‘wife’ is a little more expensive, but it (the ladyboy) will cook and wash and clean for you and also make sure your most sordid fantasies are carried out.
In our building there are quite a few of these people, and they are nothing but prostitutes. They are spreading most of the S.T.D’s around the prison, which has led to the huge numbers of H.I.V. positive and A.I.D.S cases.
In one prison the H.I.V. positive population has reached 1 in every 4 prisoners. This is due to the fact that they are all so busy screwing around with these ladyboys that they seem to forget the simple fact that A.I.D.S kills. The prison has just introduced a free condom service where a prisoner may receive a free condom, but must give their name and state the reason as to why they want the condom.
“John Smith, I want to put it over my head and blow it up to impress all my friends, sir.”
According to the prison rules, the act of Buggery is prohibited, but the screws turn a blind eye to most of the ladyboys. They are often smuggling in hormones or birth control pills in order to grow breasts, yet there are one or two that have silicone boobs already. These are the ones that are most sought after as they are the closest thing to women that many of these inmates will see for 20 – 30 years.
There is a sad story that comes to mind. One of my fellow inmates purchased a ladyboy for 300.000 baht (about £5.00) and ‘fell in love’. This inmate was then visited by his wife and two sons, one thing that always helps to keep your spirits up.
On this particular visit he informed his wife that he had found love with this ladyboy and introduced him to his wife and children as their new father. Twisted. They all accepted this quite happily and his wife still comes to visit on a regular basis and not only supports her husband, but her husband’s gay lover as well.
I would like to point out that the majority of Foreigners do not partake in the filthy act of ‘uphill mining’, but there are one or two that let the side down.
In Thailand Ladyboys are commonplace, if you ever come on a holiday you will more than likely be dragged off to see a show, where there are ladyboys present. Some people have been taken that bit further. I have known a few of them and they are mainly alright, good people trying to find their identity in this world. Then there are prison ladyboys, backstabbing bitches who will ply their sordid trade for as little as a carton of cigarettes.
No matter how long we are without women, I don’t think there is a need to partake in this act. After all it is against the rules and we don’t want to go breaking the rules now do we?
