Re:     To check the water system in Bang Kwang Prison

To:     Consul of New Zealand Embassy, Bangkok

Ref:    Letter from New Zealand Embassy dated 8 September 2006

According to the letter from the Embassy requesting the Department of Corrections to check on the water system in Bang Kwang Prison due to the Embassy was informed that some inmates were ill and have been affected by using the prison water.

The Department of Corrections would like to inform you that the Bang Kwang Prison have been using the tap water for cooking and cleaning the containers. However for bathing and cleaning cloths, Bang Kwang Prison have been using the water produced by the prison which was chlorinated 0.5ppm. For an outbreak of diarrhoea, we found the result was from a virus and now it is under control.

With regard to the lack of \water purification and the current bought of gastro-enteritis I spoke to the medical staff and the Australian. New Zealand and Dutch Embassies who all had had reports of gastric attaches and all agreed to send letters to support you all. Peter Karmy, the Consul, has signed the British letter to the Director General of the D of C. Furthermore, I understand that the Department of Health have been called into to examine food, water and cook house sample with a view to isolating the current outbreak.

I have added a copy for you Embassy a/c that has not yet had the Sept entries. Still no Warrants of Imprisonment but with a bit of luck next week. As always please pass my regards on to Steve Willcox, to whom I will write separately.

Kate Dufall

Pro Consul

Today March 7th 2007 nothing has changed to what was written in both April and September 2006 News letters!

The Filthy untreated with raw sewage from the “Chao Phaya River” is still today being pumped into Bangkwang Prison for prisoners use for bathing and cleaning clothes, and the only means of water to clean yourself after going to the toilet.

We fear the next out-break of sickness could prove fatal to prisoners here!
